Gone are the days when "buying good meat" had to mean queuing at the supermarket on a Saturday morning. Home meat delivery has taken hold in Mauritius — but between the different services, "by the weight" pricing, delivery fees and the cold chain, it's easy to get lost.

Here is how it actually works, what it costs, and the questions to ask before you hand your table over to a delivery service.

How it works: ordering by weight, explained simply

Fresh meat isn't sold like tinned goods: a rib of beef never weighs exactly 1 kg, and a free-range chicken ranges between 1.8 and 2 kg. So every serious service works on the same principle:

1. You pick your cuts — on a website, a catalogue, or straight over a message. The prices shown are per kilo, VAT included, and indicative.
2. We confirm together — available weights, the cuts you want (steak thickness, mince, cubes for curry…), estimated total. This is where a real adviser makes the difference.
3. Weighing sets the final price — you pay for the real weight of your cut, not a rounded-up flat rate. The exact amount is confirmed before delivery.
4. Delivery to your door — vacuum-sealed, kept cold, right to your door. Payment on arrival: cash or Juice (MCB), nothing online.

Deliveries in Mauritius run in rounds: services group orders by region (North, West, Port-Louis, Centre, East, South) to keep the cold chain short. In practice:

• One to two rounds a week per region, depending on availability;
• The exact slot confirmed when you order (the same day we confirm your weights and total);
• Rare cuts (premium arrivals, catch of the day) go fast — it's best to reserve as soon as they're announced.

The 4 traps to avoid

• The "it'll be fine" cold chain — insist on vacuum-sealing and refrigerated transport. Meat that has been left to warm up can't be saved.
• Flat-rate pricing with no weight — "Rs 1,200 a parcel" with no weight stated is a shot in the dark. The healthy rule: price per kilo shown VAT included, transparent weighing.
