Free-range chicken in Mauritius: why it changes everything

Free-range chicken raised outdoors, ready for delivery in Mauritius

A real free-range chicken has almost nothing in common with a factory-farmed one — not in taste, not in texture, not in the way it was raised. Once you've tasted it, it's hard to go back. Here's why, how to spot the real thing, and where to have one delivered in Mauritius.

Free-range vs factory-farmed: the real difference

How it's raised. A free-range chicken lives outdoors, with space and time. The factory-farmed bird is raised in a battery cage, packed in tight.

Time. This is the key point: a free-range chicken grows slowly — often more than 80 days, whereas the factory-farmed one is slaughtered at around 35–40 days. That time is what builds the flavour.

Feed. Grain-fed, with no growth hormones.

The result on the plate. Firm flesh, the clean taste of real chicken, and far less water released during cooking — the meat browns instead of boiling.

The test that never lies: as it cooks, a factory-farmed chicken releases a lot of water and shrinks. A free-range one holds up, browns, and keeps its bite.

Halal: what to check

As with any meat, “halal” claimed is not the same as “halal certified”. Certification is proven by document. Our free-range chicken is halal certified — and we explain it all in our guide to halal meat in Mauritius.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between free-range and factory-farmed chicken?

The free-range one is raised outdoors and grows slowly (more than 80 days versus 35–40), grain-fed: firmer flesh, a cleaner taste, less water released during cooking.

How can you recognise a real free-range chicken?

Raised outdoors, a long rearing time, a grain-based diet with no hormones, a stated origin, and firm flesh to the eye.

Is the free-range chicken halal?

Ours is halal certified, with documents to back it up — not just claimed.

How do you cook it?

Gentle, slightly longer cooking: roasted, slow-cooked, in the oven. The skin browns nicely; there's no need to add much fat.

Where can you buy it in Mauritius, and at what price?
