Meat quantity per person calculator
Calculate your quantity
A simple raw-weight estimate. The result is indicative: appetites, side dishes, cut yield and current availability can change the quantity ultimately recommended.
It's THE question we get every week on WhatsApp: "we're 8, how much should I get?". Too little and the barbecue ends early; too much and you waste a product that deserves better. Here are the portions we use ourselves to advise our customers — tested on dozens of real orders.
The short answer: there is no single serving size. For a standard meal, allow per adult 350 g for a mixed barbecue, 325 g for steak, 225 g for curry or stew, 250 g for burgers or skewers, 200 g for fish fillet and 425 g for whole fish. One child counts as half an adult. The calculator adjusts these benchmarks to your table.
The quantities chart
These raw weights per adult are the calculator’s source. A child is calculated at 50% of the adult value.
| Type of meal | Light | Standard | Generous |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed barbecue | 300 g | 350 g | 425 g |
| Steak or sharing cut | 275 g | 325 g | 400 g |
| Curry or stew | 180 g | 225 g | 275 g |
| Burgers or skewers | 200 g | 250 g | 325 g |
| Fish fillet | 170 g | 200 g | 250 g |
| Whole fish | 350 g | 425 g | 500 g |
Whole-fish weight includes the head, skin and bones. Meat generally loses some weight during cooking. The final result is rounded up to the next 100 g and shown with an indicative ±10% margin.
The 3 adjustments that change everything
- Sides count. Rice, lentils, salads, bread: the more there are, the lower in the range you can aim. A meat-focused barbecue with friends: aim high.
- How long the meal lasts. An all-afternoon barbecue consumes more than a seated dinner — the grill keeps going as long as people stay. Add 100 g per adult if it's going to last.
- Mixing the cuts. For a group, combine: one showpiece to share (côte de bœuf, tomahawk), reliable crowd-pleasers (skewers, sausages), and one discovery (Wagyu burgers). Everyone builds their plate and nothing is left over.
And for big occasions?
Wedding, birthday, end-of-year party: beyond 15 guests, leftovers are easier to manage — aim for the low end of the ranges and add one 1 kg "buffer" cut you can freeze if it doesn't go. Vacuum-packed meat keeps for months in the freezer without losing quality.

Frequently asked questions
How much meat per person for a barbecue?
The calculator uses 350 g raw per adult for a standard barbecue, 300 g for a light meal or 425 g for a generous one. A child counts as half an adult.
How much meat for a curry or rougaille?
The standard benchmark is 225 g raw meat per adult, with a range from 180 to 275 g depending on sides and appetites.
How much fish per person?
For a standard meal, allow 200 g per adult as fillets or 425 g as whole fish. Whole-fish weight includes the head, skin and bones.
Raw or cooked — which weight counts?
Always raw — that's the weight you buy. Cooking loses 20–30%: 400 g raw gives about 300 g on the plate.
What to do with leftover raw meat?
Vacuum-packed meat freezes for months without losing quality. Freeze flat on delivery day and thaw overnight in the fridge, never at room temperature.
